Comparing Perception of Presence between Binaural and Stereo Reproduction

Binaural audio is an integral part not only of virtual reality, but also of many other formats where it contributes to the overall level of presence. The aim of this paper is to explore whether the binaural format itself gives the audience a greater sense of presence than traditional stereo reproduction. An experiment was carried on a sample of thirty-two experienced listeners in which we compared four attributes of presence (Sense of Being There, Spatial Presence, Involvement, Realism) on two different recordings using an IPQ questionnaire. In most of the observed attributes, respondents reported higher values for the stereo format. On the contrary, we did not observe a greater sense of presence for binaural reproduction in any of the observed attributes.
