A piezoelectric tooth-contact microphone (accelerometer) has been developed to investigate its performance in diving masks for deep submergence atmospheres. A bandwidth of 10 kHz is required to accommodate the spectrum of helium speech. Investigations have been made of the transfer characteristic of the tooth structure. The microphone provides intelligible speech in a mask without response equalization, and has good antinoise performance. Significant human factor problems exist with regard to fitting and wearing the microphone.
