Some years ago the English pianist Gerald Moore, author of "The Unashamed Accompanist," wrote a sequel with the provocative title, "Am I Too Loud?" We pose the same question in a different context, that of the discotheque and the "pop" music concert. We will summarize available information on the effect of short and long term exposure in creating temporary or permanent hearing damage, and will attempt to suggest guidelines for the maximum levels to which an audience should be subjected.
