Sound recording using frequency modulation techniques eliminates two shortcomings of conventional direct recording: 1) distortion due to nonlinearities in the magnetic oxide and, 2) fluctuations in the playback response due to variations in the tapes. Yet FM recording is not prohibitively expensive as is digital recording (PCM). A computer simulation showing the feasibility of a 53 kHz FM carrier (for high fidelity audio) is reported. A low distortion FM tape recorder is built and analyzed.
