Development and evaluation of a real-time hearing loss simulation platform

This work aims to improve awareness of the needs of people affected by (partial) hearing loss. Therefore an easily reproducible platform for the simulation of hearing loss effects was developed. A basic simulation of the four main hearing loss effects (amplitude reduction, loudness recruitment, spectral smearing, and temporal smearing) was implemented on this platform. The implementation was then tested for its effect on empathy and awareness regarding the needs of those affected by hearing loss. The study showed a general increase in the empathy aspect of “perspective taking”, but no difference between the newly developed simulation and a simple simulation with hearing protection earmuffs.
