A Hierarchical Approach to Lossless Coding of Multichannel and Immersive Audio

Techniques for improving multichannel lossless coding are introduced. A method is proposed for hierarchical simultaneous coding of two or more different mixes of the same content. Unlike in prior methods limited to cascaded Toeplitz systems, the prediction parameters are jointly optimized via a general linear solver, and the prediction residual is Rice coded. Additionally, the use of a projection prior to residual coding is proposed as being of general benefit in lossless audio coding. Comparisons with various multichannel and immersive material are made against more traditional methods, including FLAC. The proposed methods show improved compression ratios for surround music alone, as well as for hierarchical coding. Future work would include further validation and improved modeling of a non-static downmix relation to upmix.
