Presentation Mode and Its Impact on Sentiment in Free Verbalization Responses to Sounds

With the increase in online testing being used for sound perception research, it is necessary to explore whether changing the presentation mode impacts the responses to sound. We ran three different experiments, audio-only (online), audio with video (online), and in person with a sound-making object (a robot). We tested four different versions of five sounds (human and robot emotes). Participants used free verbalization to respond to the question of what the sound was communicating to them. Results showed that, when it comes to sentiment analysis, there was no statistical difference between presentation modes. However, there were differences in responses, including significantly more onomatopoeia used in the audio-only condition.
