A Spectral Tilt Tone Control

This paper describes the design and implementation of a simple tone-balance control that uniformly tilts the whole audio spectrum in a simple power-law way, based on a related design by Ambler. It allows both rising and falling responses at variable rates, having a perfectly flat response with the single tilt control potentiometer in its central position. The design process is supported by theory and completed with visually-guided optimization of the components. Circuit diagrams are presented, along with component values for a number of implementations covering the audio spectrum. Aspects of the various designs are discussed.
