Immersive Audio Reproduction and Adaptability for Irregular Loudspeaker Layouts Using Modified EBU ADM Renderer

Immersive and multichannel audio commonly utilize a limited set of defacto output loudspeaker layouts. However, modern applications may result in using arbitrary numbers of speakers in varying directions. Aiming to realize broadcast-quality reproduction in such situations, we modify the EBU ADM Renderer to handle user-defined output layouts beyond the standard 10 available. Listening tests with object-based material are run to assess the performance of the proposed renderer, and to illustrate typical differences that can occur with different example cases. While the results show the utility of the proposed modification, we also recognize the lack of ideal layout-adaptability in typical gain-based immersive reproduction.
