A general discussion is presented concerning the engineering development of a new tone arm manufactured by Gray, which exhibits exceptional characteristics. Utilizing separate vertical and horizontal pivots, effective vertical mass is kept to a minimum while sufficient horizontal mass is provided to assure proper operation with lower compliance cartridges. Static balance is provided in the horizontal plane and this, in conjunction with permanently retained viscous damping in both pivots, assures optimum tracking stability and resistance to groove hopping due to external shock. Curves are used to illustrate the effect of viscous damping on performance at low frequency.
