A New Direct Drive Turntable with Parallel Tracking Arm

This paper describes the design of a novel direct drive turntable motor that may be produced at low cost and a servo controlled parallel tracking pickup arm. These two elements may be integrated into a single transcription unit. The performance of the motor can be so good that it has been our intention to investigate the best possible way of reproducing discs. This implied using a parallel tracking arm. Considerable work was directed towards the form this should take. It was appreciated that the cost of the arm could not match the possible low motor cost and so it was appropriate to consider the inclusion in an integrated unit, which would necessarily be a relatively high priced product, of peripheral functions and to control the resulting unit by means of electronic logic. Some aspects of this control logic are briefly described towards the end of the paper.
