The audio power output that is available from any given pair of transistors is limited by the temperature rise of the internal functions, and this in turn is fixed by the RMS values of the current flowing averaged over any one cycle of the test frequency. In practice, when handling speech and music signals there are additional intervals in the signal that allow the ratio of peak to average current to be further increased without exceeding the thermal limits.
