Distortion in magnetic recording is generated by the nonlinearity of the tape`s transfer function VO = f (Vi). This function is shown for an unbiased and an AC-biased tape in figures 1 and 2 respectively. The overall gain is assumed to be 1 (= 0 dB). The biased tape transfer function can be approximated by the mathematical expression: VO = Vi - c Vi3.
