"Scratch" noise, i.e. impulsive noise due to the abrasive filler added to shellac, is the main source of noise on many electrical 78 r.p.m. records. Typically, one finds that there are around 100 such impulses per second. We describe a method of suppressing much of this noise that basically involves two steps: detecting the presence of an impulse, and suppressing the audio output during such an impulse.
