The radiation of cabinet walls has been examined. The sound output at the fundamental bending resonance, falling in the bass range, approaches or exceeds that of the speaker itself. It was confirmed that gluing thick bituminised damping pads to the panels reduces the radiation considerably at resonance and even more so at the overtones. Under some conditions, shapes of constant curvature, i.e. tubes and spheres, do not resonate in bending, but only in direct stress, at very much higher frequencies, in the treble range. The performance of tubular cabinets in the bass was far superior to any flat-sided timber cabinet, and was equal to that of 4-in thick concrete.
