It has long been recognized by designers that the material of which a loudspeaker cabinet is made can substantially affect the sound quality, and the cause of the trouble is known to lie in the resonances of the cabinet walls. These can give rise to a colored sound, the commonly used term "boxy quality" adequately describing the result. The traditional material used is wood in some form or other, and it is known that some cabinets are capable of giving excellent results, others are so highly colored as to be unusable for monitoring purposes.
