Logatom Intelligibility and Vowel Identification of Bandlimited Transmission Systems

Speech quality after transmission over a great number of analog transmission systems of different bandwidths and frequent positions was investigated. The bandwidth ran between five and one-third octaves, the different frequency positions were in the range between 180 Hz and 5.6 kHz. Besides the classical investigation of the logatom intelligibility, the percentage of vowels understood correctly of the test material (CVC-Logatoms) was evaluated. In the paper the identification scores of the vowels a:, e:, i:, o:, u:, determined at 37 different transmission systems, are given. Starting from the knowledge of the formant areas of the vowels and from the identification scores for the transmission systems under test, conclusions in terms of the vowel identification loss for the case of an incomplete transmission of all formant areas are presented.
