A discussion of contemporary noise reduction techniques illustrates the drawbacks inherent in any purely analog or purely digital approach. In this paper a new noise reduction scheme is proposed which utilizes the wide dynamic range of analog systems and the flexibility of digital systems, with the emphasis on the latter. A number of new features made possible by such a system are described, indicating another powerful use for the microprocessor.
