Magnetic recording theory applied to dropout phenomena is reviewed. Based on the results, a dropout test-set was realized, applicable for testing of recording-devices and -media in both analog and digital recording. Dropout statistics, e.g. for recording code optimization, are obtainable from microprocessor-based procesing of the measured dropout data.
