Using the example of the UMX system, we describe the overall performance as regards signal/noise ration in mono, stereo and surround reception, along with other properties, of FM multiplex broadcast systems for surround sound using 2, 21/2 and 3 channels of information. Performance figures depend on both the precise encoding used, and also on the particular decoder design for surround sound. The analysis is based on European operating conditions and the performance of existing stereo receivers used in Europe. Constraints in U.S. operating condition are slightly different. Although the methods of analysis used here are still applicable to U.S. requirements, some conclusions may need modification for U.S. use.
