The dynamic range of optical couplers has been investigated with respect to their applicability to hi-fi circuitry. It has been found that the dominant limitation is established by the shot noise of the photo diode. Circuit examples will be shown which yield a dynamic range in excess of 80 dB for less than 1% third-order intermodulation distortion.
