Computerized Analysis and Observation of the Vibration Modes of a Loudspeaker Cone

Conventionally, loudspeaker cones have been designed in a trial-and-error fashion. Because of complex difficulties encountered in loudspeaker cone design, a mathematical approach never became popular, that is, until the finite element method was recently introduced. We applied this method to simulate vibrations and sound radiations from loudspeaker cones, and the results were in favorable agreement with actual measurements. The vibration modes were displayed by a computer on a graphic display device, then photographed sequentially for observation through motion picture; thus facilitating observation of cone vibration, particularly in the high frequency region.
