The specification of power amplifier output capability, seemingly a simple matter, has in practice been subject to confusion. An effort is made to clarify this matter. Following review of relevant theoretical relationships, the behavior of amplifiers under actual, non-ideal conditions of use, is discussed. Some suggestions for a rationalized specification are given.
