Tapes based on acicular metal particles can be made which, under conditions typical for audio cassette recording, give an outstanding performance when compared to chromium dioxide (CrO/2): an increased signal-to-noise ratio (about 3 dB) combined with a better high-frequency maximum output level (up to 9 dB). Although these tapes have a high coercivity (about 75 kA/m), these results can be obtained with a bias level setting which is only about 3 dB higher in comparison to Cr0/2. They can be used with the same playback equalization.
