A discussion of the function of the horn, together with theoretical consideration as to the design of the horn to perform this function in the best way, are given. In the body of the paper, a proof is given to show that the exponential increase in section gives the best results. For this reason, a large part of the appendix is given to the analytical solution of sound propagation in exponential horns. From the results of this work and the well-known equations relating first-order effects in the telephone receiver, formulas are developed that make possible the design of horns.
