Non-Linear Estimation of FM Synthesis Parameters

A nonlinear analysis method based on an extended Kalman filter (EKF) is derived to estimate the FM synthesis parameters corresponding to a given digitized sound input. Previously these parameters could only be obtained by manual trial and error. After a transmission of the nonlinear state and parameter space implied by FM synthesis, and the apparent error effects, the EKF is derived. Results are compared for accuracy in the frequency domain, and on a subjective basis.
