It has been roughly 25 years since the development of the first practical solid state audio power amplifier. During that time our perception of the role of solid state devices and their effect on sonic performance has changed considerably. In view of these perceptions I would like to discuss a most unique Class A power amplifier technology developed at SAE and marketed under the title "Hypersonic Class A." Hypersonic refers to five times the speed of sound, a liberal interpretation of the 100kHz open loop bandwidth characteristic and Class A refers to the employment of the Thornton fixed bias Class A Technique.
