Factors impeding the transition from analog tape recording to digital recording for professional recording applications are 1) high acquisition cost of equipment, 2) lack of an editing system with the feel of slow speed playback, and 3) possible inadequacy of error correction technique. This paper describes a total concept for a digital tape recording system which was developed to resolve the above-mentioned technical problems. Thin film record/reproduce head assemblies manufactured through an automatic production process, an editing system which consists of a solid state memory with arbitrary rate of readout, and an advanced error correction system are some of the technologies applied to the new equipment.
