Cumulative spectral analysis is closely related to tone-burst testing. Contrary to popular assumptions, conventional tone-burst testing employs quite wide test-signal bandwidth, and this is the cause of familiar problems in interpreting the test results. Apodization, or smoothing of the abrupt truncations associated with tone bursts, greatly reduces these problems. The corresponding application of apodization to cumulative spectral analysis leads to new projected three-dimensional displays which are more specifically related to the test-object characteristics and are easier to interpret and compare.
