Piecewise Interpolation Technique for Audio Signal Synthesis

A waveform synthesis technique which interpolates breakpoints by an arbitrary function is described. Ordinates of breakpoints can be evaluated as functions of specified harmonic levels and a selected interpolation function. Therefore this technique may be comparable to classical additive synthesis. If we use half-cosine as the interpolation function, we can decrease uncontrollable higher harmonics. Moreover, since an approximate half-cosine can be evaluated by only additions, this technique provides a cost-effective means for waveform synthesis. As a consequence, real-time synthesis using a digital computer may be possible.
