Recreational sound constitutes an occupational hazard to audio engineers and adds to the effects of occupational noise for most other people, accelerating the occurrence of sensorineural deafness in advanced nations. Statistics regarding permissible noise levels and the increasing occurrence of sensorineural hearing impairment point up the need for audio engineers to take self-protective steps and to participate in educating the public to the dangers of sustained overexposure to loud sounds.
