The effect of the acoustical phase response of loudspeaker drivers on the pressure response of multiway systems is examined. It is shown that the phase lead in the response of upper frequency drivers which is caused by a cutoff frequency that is too near the crossover frequency can cause an erratic system output in the crossover region. The responses of seven traditional crossover network functions are examined to determine the sensitivity of each to these effects. A new crossover network system is proposed which electrically simulates the acoustical response of the upper frequency driver in order to correct for the effects of its amplitude and phase response on the system acoustic pressure output in the crossover region.
