NHK inaugurated the world`s first direct broadcast satellite service in May, 1984. In this service, the PCM digital system is combined with Mode A and Mode B to be used in transmitting sound to the audience via the direct broadcast satellite. Mode B in particular is designed for transmitting high-quality sound. Mode B has an audio bandwidth of 20 kHz with a dynamic range of more than 90 dB. Sound transmitted using this system very closely approximates live performances. It captures the impressive and appealing nature of live sound across a wide volume range, from pianissimo to fortissimo. We would like to report on the results of our research on mixing and transmitting techniques which were developed for effectively utilizing this medium.:
