Influence of Group Delay Distortion of Low-Pass Filters on Tone Quality for Digital Audio Systems

For these years in recording studios and broadcasting stations, various editing work with PCM multitrack tape recorders has increased. In the works, we usually carry on the mixdown and overdubbing many times, but the audio mixing console does not be digitized completely at present. Therefore we have repeated analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue conversions many times, and then quantizing noise and group delay distortion of low-pass filters with very steep attenuation characteristics are added to original signals. As a result, it is seen that the distortion has noticeable influence on tone quality.: Especially a deterioration of tone quality caused by the influence of group delay distortion has not yet been discussed in detail.: Then we made a listening test and investigated the influence on tone quality due to the group delay distortion, and we have verified the permissible value of the attenuation characteristics of low-pass filters in digital audio systems.:
