The usual procedure for selecting loudspeaker systems in low-frequency commercial applications is to consult a manufacturer`s catalog sheets and select a device, or a group of devices, which appear to satisfy the criteria for the desired sound-pressure levels in the installation environment. The criteria normally used by sound consultants and contractors are pressure sensitive, frequency response, power capacity, and attenuation-with-distance formulas. As a consequence, the design of low-frequency loudspeaker systems is largely a trial-and-error process based upon limited available data, and the results are often disappointing. Recently, however, cognizant manufacturers have made Thiele-Small parameters available for commercial drivers, greatly simplifying the system design process and enabling predictable results to be obtained.
