Pitch segregation is an example of spontaneous auditory perceptual grouping in which one component of a complex is perceptually enhanced, or several are enhanced in turn, forming a tune or scale. Three component manipulations are discussed which produce pitch segregation by (1) altering the apparent location of the component (interaural time disparity); (2) briefly reducing and then restoring the amplitude of the component (momentary amplitude disparity); or (3) phase shifting one component of a monaural harmonic series (monaural phase disparity).
