Some auditory illusions and confusions are discussed, including perceptual restoration of masked sounds (temporal induction), the loss of lateralization of a monoaural signal when accompanied by contralateral noise (contralateral induction), and illusory changes in repeated words (verbal transformations). Each of these illusions seems to be caused by processes which act to enhance the accuracy of perception in the noisy environments encountered during everyday life.
