A High-Efficiency Audio Power Amplifier

A compact audio amplifier with high power and low distortion has been developed. The supply voltage for the class-B output stage of the amplifier is varied with the input signal so that the voltage applied to the active output transistor is held small and constant, appreciably reducing transistor dissipation. Total power dissipation is reduced to one-half that of the conventional class-B amplifier, the size of the heat sink to one-fifth, and overall weight to one-quarter. The amplifier is efficient, shows a distortion of 0.01% at 20-kHz maximum output, and a signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB (IHF-A network).
