With almost all the forms of visual and aural media, there is a need for the programme maker to consider how their programme will look and/or sound, not just in the place where it was made but after it has been distributed to a large number of different outlets. The -mechanics- of the different distribution systems often involve compromises because it is a frequent and very necessary requirement that any improvements which are introduced are added in a way which does not make the earlier techniques redundant. This paper discusses some of the possibilities for deriving the necessary monophonic signal from a stereophonic source under the possibly differing conditions of television and radio.
