We are interested in tools that aid in generating printed music. Our interest focuses specifically on printing of a quality suitable for the finest published editions. Music printing of this quality has traditionally required substantial manual effort to produce results that are musically correct and aesthetically pleasing. In the last decade a number of computer tools that aid in the process of setting and publishing music have begun to appear. These are variously research systems, academic projects, and service-oriented commercial ventures.: In the last year or so, various hardware and software developments have made it practical to begin developing computer aided music notation systems that are affordable, as complete systems, to a wider variety of users. Our focus is on the development of systems that satisfy certain stringent criteria to merit the description -engraving quality-. While there are many important technical and artistic aspects of music setting, we shall explore primarily the graphics issues that determine whether or not the printed result will be of this high quality.
