Equipment Performance Specifications in Stereo Television Production and Transmission

The production, transmission, and faithful reproduction of a -stereo- program for television, whatever the intended artistic effect, depends on successful engineering of the entire system. It necessitates new techniques of measuring and controlling sound quality and increased vigilance from the engineers responsible for it.: This paper, primarily tutorial in nature, examines some of the many -black boxes- through which the stereo signal must pass and assesses their effect in both subjective and objective terms. Practical, empirical specifications for individual devices and the end-to-end system are presented, including techniques for measuring and correcting deficiencies where practical.
