Low Bit Rate Codecs for Audio Signals Implementation in Real Time

Coding of audio signals at bit rates down to 64 kbit/sec can be implemented with the state of the art single-chip processors such as DSP32 or DSP56000. The benefits are small board size and high flexibility. A portable hardware will be presented that allows easy tuning of low bit-rate codecs and their evaluation based upon psychoacoustical criteria, by observing the noise to mask ratio (NMR). The architecture of ASICs can be derived by modifying these general-purpose signal processors.
