This paper discusses the points considered in designing an effective hands-free microphone system for use in an automobile. Most cellular telephones offer a "hands-free" option, but an alarming number of subscribers use handsets while driving in traffic. A contributing factor may be that the performance of the "hands-free" unit generally is not as intelligible as the handset.
