Computer music systems often lack the capability of producing full-bandwidth sound in real time. Yet for the development phase of a musical work, the requirement for real-time processing can be more important than the requirement for high fidelity. There is a need for the capability of computing samples at reduced rates, and converting the samples in real time. But the reconstruction filter must then have a variable cutoff frequency. An output subsystem for computer music is described. It is based on a switched-capacitor reconstruction filter with variable cutoff frequency. The subsystem allows the generation and conversion of samples at rates specified under software control. A similar design can be used for variable sampling-rate audio input.
