Measuring the Properties of Loudspeaker Materials for Low-Frequency Drive Units

Loudspeaker bass units depend critically for their sound quality upon the properties of their diaphragm and surround materials. This paper describes a simple test rig which enables Young`s modulus and loss factor to be measured over a bass unit`s complete frequency range for materials in sheet form, even if extremely floppy, as surrounds usually are. Plots of elasticity and loss angle are shown for some typical loudspeaker diaphragm and surround materials.
