Finite-length line sources are amenable to analytic treatment only in the far field, but are sometimes proposed for use in the near field. We calculate numerically the behavior of unbaffled and untapered line sources of both monopoles and dipoles over the whole range from near field to far field, in order to provide some graphical data from which general behavior patterns can be deduced to aid design in the absence of suitable formulas. It is found that a smooth flat frequency response both on and off axis requires a monopolar line source used in the extreme far field, which is impractical. In the near field the response becomes irregular, distance-dependent, directional, and not feasible to equalize. The dipolar line source does not appear to be useful for monitoring purposes.
