PDM has been employed for cue and time-code tracks of a stationary-head PCM recorder in order to facilitate headblock design and adjustment and to reduce interference. PDM was chosen due to its smooth dropout behavior and compatibility with analog recordings. The paper describes a digital version of the modulator and an analog version utilizing companding and emphasis.
