This paper describes briefly the characteristics of the vu meter and the Peak Programme Meter, both in common use by broadcasters and studios all over the world. The new three level test tone, recommended by CCITT for international programme exchange will be discussed with special relation to the vu meter. Also the need for a new Thrue PPM with less htan 0.1 ms integration time will be discussed in the view of digital recording equipment.
