Diaphragm excursion is one of the least examined but most basic loudspeaker system design parameters. It can be argued that this quantity shares equal significance with such matters as frequency response and loudspeaker directional properties, yet it typically receives more limited consideration. Its significance lies in the limits it sets on the amount of power a system can radiate. This is especially important at low frequencies where performance demands can easily challenge available art. Excursion is examined from the standpoints of performance and design implications. Special emphasis is given to the effects of specific system type and results of changes in Thiele/Small parameters at high output levels. Several unusual findings are described.
