Cooperation between AEG and BASF-then IG Farben, Ludwigshafen works-concerning the Magnetophon sound-recording system began in the fall of 1932. Formulation of the first tapes and their production are described: first carbonyl iron (1933), then iron oxide Fe(3)O(4) (1936), and finally iron oxide Fe(2)O(3) (1939) on a cellulose acetate base, the latter oxide mixed in since 1943 and, since 1945, coated on polyvinyl chloride film. A concise survey from the mid-1950s traces development leading up to modern analog tape technology.
